January Newsletter

We hope you’ve all had a fantastic festive season and are ready for an exciting year ahead with Wetherby Athletic Junior Football Club.

Reflecting on December

December was a fantastic month for the club, with several events bringing our community together.

Toy Drive

Thank you to Katie for leading the charge. The generous donations felt like Santa had arrived early. We’re grateful to everyone who contributed to this wonderful cause.

Dave Bock’s Final Week of the 50-in-52 Challenge

Congratulations to Dave Bock for completing his incredible challenge of running 50 miles a week for 52 weeks in memory of Ethan Westerman. Over 200 participants from Wetherby Athletic JFC joined him for his final Wetherby Park Run. Dave has raised a tremendous amount of money and heightened awareness around mental health. Thank you to everyone who participated, supported, and donated.

Boxing Day Fun – WAJFC Dads vs. KDR Dads

The Boxing Day Dads’ game was a standout moment. Thank you to all the players and supporters who made it such a competitive and entertaining match. We plan to repeat it next year at Grange Park, with a ladies’ game included – exciting news for everyone!

Special thanks to Rob, Simon, and Gav for officiating and Clare for running the bar – and the unofficial “lock-in” afterward!

Looking Ahead to January

January is shaping up to be a busy month as we return to the footballing routine and plan for the months ahead.

Harrogate Town

Wetherby Athletic JFC will feature in Harrogate Town’s New Year’s Day program. Many of our teams have enjoyed trips to their games through the Kickback Scheme. Harrogate Town is fast becoming a favorite local professional club.

Gala Planning Begins

(Shhh, don’t say it out loud!) Preparations for our annual Gala begin this month. Soon, we’ll be reaching out for volunteers. Don’t worry – we promise no boiling water across two pitches this year… just one! With last year’s experience, we’re confident everything will run smoothly.

Club Subs Reminder

As we dive into the second half of the season, club subs are now due. We kindly ask parents to take responsibility for this without requiring follow-ups from coaches or club leaders.

For families needing financial assistance, please reach out to your coach or club leadership. We handle these matters privately and are committed to ensuring every child can participate.

Let’s Kick Off 2025 Right

We’re excited to see everyone back in action this month. Let’s make this year one to remember as we grow together as a club and community.

Warm Regards,

Robert Clabby

MIKE SHEERIN – A LEGEND OF OUR CLUB If you have been following the fortunes of our football club for the last 18 years, there has been one person who has been instrumental in nurturing and growing the younger boys age groups, as well as being a leader in developing the club and being the driving force in our hugely successful galas. That person is Mike Sheerin. Starting in the 2003/4 season as the assistant to Geoff Cheetham’s U8 boys team, Mike then took on the role of coaching the U8 and U7 boys from 2006/7 and stayed with the younger age groups all the way until Sunday 27th June 2021. Mike’s impact on the club is impossible to pay credit to in a couple of paragraphs. He has been selfless in his service, giving up a huge amount of time to coach, attend club & league meetings, make pitch improvements and provide endless amounts of advice to aspiring and experienced coaches. Simply put, we wouldn’t be the club we are without him. We must also remember that the hours he has given to Wetherby Athletic require the support and encouragement of Mike’s wife, Nicola. We extend a special thanks to her for allowing Mike to spend his weekends out of the house for the last 18 years and hope that you both enjoy Mike’s newfound free time. Mike, a big THANK YOU for everything that you have done; you are a Legend.
